Message Summary:
Christ the King Sunday is the last Sunday of the church year. Fitting way to end and begin ministry -- with Christ the King front and center! May Christ be the center of our lives and the center of our church's mission. Matthew 25:31-46 serves as litmus test for the church. It also serves as a mission statement for the body of Christ. Read and mull over Jesus' words -- Kingdom words for living in God's Kingdom. See you Sunday!

Readings: 2 Timothy 2:11-13
Message Summary:
If the heart of the gospel is that Jesus Christ died and rose again to give eternal life to repentant people who place their faith in Him, then the foundation of the gospel is the unchanging faithfulness of God. Every promise of God, including salvation, rings with power because God will always remain true to Himself.

Sermon
Music: "Encouragement of Faith” (CoF Choir)
Readings: 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10; Matthew 4:12-17
Message Summary:
Everything can change in a day. When young Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the Wittenberg Chapel door he merely planned to spark a civil debate among church men about the abuse of papal indulgences (in effect a get-out-of-purgatory-free card). Little did he know that day a great light dawned in the darkness, the culmination of the hopes and desires of many saints who knew the Word of God had been held captive to the traditions of men. They had made good things into ultimate things. Luther's first point describes our own tendency to neglect an honest relationship with God: "When our Lord and Master, Jesus Christ, said 'Repent,' He called for the entire life of believers to be one of repentance." The 62nd brings us back to the main thing: "The true treasure of the church is the holy gospel of the glory and the grace of God."
Because the Gospel is for both Christians and non-Christians, Luther confronted the idols of his culture, and invites us to confront the same in our day. What are the things that captivate our hearts and lead us away from trusting God and living joyfully in Him? When we discover our heart idols, uproot them, and replace them with the gospel of Jesus, life is put back in the right way. We are being are made new, our desires are re-centered in Him. Jesus again becomes our whole religion, because He is all our righteousness. He welcomes us to bring not our doing, but our need.

What God began through Jesus He is completing through the life and work of the Spirit of God. God reconciled us to Himself through the perfect life and sacrificial death of His Son. When we have the continual assurance that God's power and resources are at work in us, there is no longer any reason to lose heart. We can lead courageously and take take risks, trusting in God's protection. He chose us to display His worth in all things, so our weaknesses prove His ability. God is overwhelming our hearts with His Gospel, so our perspective on life and death has been radically upgraded. Success has been redefined as being whatever God calls us to become and do, as long as He is with us.

September 11 2011: "All New Confidence"
Readings: 2 Corinthians 3:1-18; Psalm 27:1-3// shifting our confidence from our personal success, power, influence, approval and comforts to the One who impressed God for us.
Message Summary
The entire Bible can be summed up in God’s two words: Trust Me. And the entire world’s heart-cry can be summed up in two other words: Assure me. Assure me I am loved, assure me I am safe, assure me I’ll be taken care of, that I’m okay, and that all these plaguing fears will not come true. Our heart-hunger is for confidence. God hears our prayers and answers with something far better: His Son Jesus who has impressed the Father for us. Godly confidence has an all-new source from which to draw. We can set aside our plaguing fears and hold fast to God's sure promises. We can be confident of this: redemption has come.

Scripture: Romans 11:33-36, Isaiah 55:6-9
For most of time, humans have tried to understand God through their own experience. We have often uttered the phrase, "I could never believe in a God that..." or "Why would a loving God do...." and we forget the position of God: far above our thoughts and ways. Most of the streams of incorrect theology make much of humans and less of God. This week we will remind one another of God's role in the universe.

What if God never told you to try? What if, in his grace, he asked us to train for something? That would make our faith look quite different.

Scripture: Ephesians 2:1-10, 3:14-21
There comes a time in our lives where we must decide what we think about ourselves and then what God thinks of us. While many of us would say, "God loves me," our actions and attitudes show us to be religious people trying to earn God's favor. The gospel's great and offensive claim is that we could never earn God's love, but rather it is granted to us. We are blessed to even know it.

The Bible frequently warns us that as history winds ever closer to its finale, those who follow Christ will become subject to greater and more intense ridicule. We see it already today. So how can we best prepare ourselves for the coming ridicule and continue to stand strong for Christ in the face of scoffing and mockery?

Scripture: Main Text: Acts 4:18-31; Gospel: Matthew 8:23-27
The early church grew, in large part, because it was bold. Yet it didn't start out that way. The disciples we see in the Gospels and the ones we observe in the book of Acts look like two very different groups—and in a sense, they are. The timid and often fearful men of the Gospels become bold and courageous ambassdors of the gospel when they invited the Holy Spirit of God to fill them with the boldness they needed to represent Christ well. It's a recipe that still produces great results today.

Scripture: Main Text: Jonah 1; Gospel: John 6:1-13
We serve a staggeringly creative God. Throughout the Bible we see Him using that creativity in highly imaginative ways in order to expand His kingdom and bring people from darkness to light. We are made in His image . . . and yet somehow too often we shrink from tapping into the imagination God gave us. We tend to settle for stale imitation, for the usual routine—for a "Me, too" approach—rather than for Spirit-empowered innovation. But what would happen if we met today's challenges (in the church and in our lives) with God-inspired creativity? Imagine that!

When we think of the "impossible," we usually think of negative things: it's impossible for us to win, it's impossible to get everything done in time, it's impossible to do what's necessary, or even, "you're impossible." But Easter shows us there's a good side to impossible, too—a very, very, very good side.

Hard (But Crucial) Lessons of the Kingdom
People in our day often talk about God as if He were a doddering grandfather, a harmless well-wisher, or a cosmic bumbler. Even Christians sometimes harbor unhelpful ideas about who God is and how they should relate to Him. The Transfiguration of Christ helps set the record straight in some surprising and very practical ways.

Hard (But Crucial) Lessons of the Kingdom
Many of us grow frustrated when we try to read the Bible. Despite our best efforts, it seems, we often find it difficult to understand. Is there something wrong with us? Why should we struggle so much to grasp the meaning of God's Word? The disciples' experience often mirrors our own—and can give us great encouragement to press on.

"The Fear: Men Confront the Problem of Uncertainty"
Fear of the unknown often drives men to foolish and ultimately destructive behavior. While their battle with uncertainty may take a turn unlike that of the women closest to them, a better understanding of their battle—and learning some critical ways to address it—will help both men and women to walk together into a much brighter future.

"The Haunting: Women Face the Plague of Insecurity"
While Acts 27 records a harrowing story involving males only, the issues it raises have particular relevance to modern women—and therefore to all the men in their lives. How does genuine faith deal with the pain of being ignored, facing the loss of basic necessities, dealing with relationship difficulties, and other equally huge (and very contemporary) challenges?

"The Key Question"
Although most of us loathe uncertainty, it is destined to play a huge role in all of our lives. How we respond to uncertainty tends to put us on one of two roads: either it prepares us to thrive, or it sets us up for failure. Acts 27 presents us with a scenario that brims over with uncertainty—but something the apostle Paul said in the middle of a violent storm provides us with the key question in determining which road we will travel.
Verses: Old Testament reading: Psalm 46:1-3, Gospel reading: Luke 8:22-25, Epistle reading: Romans 8:28-39
